In this episode of the Productized Podcast, host Pedro Ganço sits down with Mike Todasco, a seasoned innovator, AI enthusiast, and former Senior Director of Innovation at PayPal. Currently a Visiting Fellow at the James Silberrad Brown Center for AI at San Diego State University, Mike has spent his career at the intersection of creativity, technology, and business. With over 100 patents to his name, he has led product launches, driven innovation initiatives, and built strategies that empower teams to think outside the box.
Mike’s journey from finance and strategy to entrepreneurship and AI-driven product innovation showcases the power of adaptability and curiosity. In this episode, he shares his insights on fostering innovation in teams, leveraging AI to enhance creativity, and navigating the evolving landscape of product management.
In This Episode, Mike Covered:
How AI is revolutionizing creativity and product innovation.
The role of curiosity in driving career evolution and entrepreneurship.
Lessons from leading innovation at PayPal and beyond.
Why failure is a critical component of innovation.
Frameworks for fostering a culture of creativity in teams.
Some Takeaways from Mike:
Foster a culture of innovation by recognizing small acts of creativity. Mike implemented a simple yet effective practice at PayPal: asking his team weekly what innovative thing they had done, whether personal or professional. By normalizing and celebrating small creative actions, organizations can nurture an environment where innovation thrives organically.
Break limiting beliefs about who is ‘innovative.’ Mike found that half his team didn’t consider themselves creative. Through structured exercises and regular discussions on problem-solving, he helped them realize that everyone has the capacity to innovate. Encouraging individuals to recognize their own creativity is the first step toward fostering an innovation mindset.
Failure is an essential part of the innovation process. Mike shared examples of PayPal’s failed projects, including PayPal Beacon—a hands-free payment system that was technologically ahead of its time but lacked customer demand. He emphasized that failures should be documented and revisited, as the right timing can turn a past failure into a future success.
AI is a powerful tool for ideation and iteration. Mike actively uses generative AI tools like Claude and ChatGPT to refine his writing and brainstorm new ideas. These tools help accelerate the creative process by acting as sparring partners, offering alternative perspectives, and enhancing productivity.
Entrepreneurial thinking is key to product management success. Reflecting on his journey from finance to product management, Mike highlighted how thinking like an entrepreneur—embracing uncertainty, testing hypotheses, and rapidly iterating—enables product managers to build impactful solutions.
Encourage structured innovation processes in organizations. Mike introduced the ‘Kickbox’ program at PayPal, inspired by Adobe’s open-source innovation framework. This initiative provided employees with a structured approach to developing and testing ideas, ultimately leading to greater creativity and breakthrough solutions.
AI regulation should balance innovation with ethical considerations. While Mike believes AI will be a net positive for society, he acknowledges the need for legal clarity in areas like copyright law. He argues that most existing regulations are sufficient, but that companies and governments must ensure responsible AI use without stifling progress.
